Patriots Take Cannon After Cancer Diagnosis

Sep 12, 2014 3:32 PM

The Patriots have chosen offensive lineman Marcus Cannon out of TCU in the fifth round of the NFL draft. Cannon learned last week that he has a treatable form of non-Hodgkins lymphoma, according to a report, but that didn't deter the Patriots. New England chose the 358-pound Cannon with the 10th pick of the fifth round which they obtained on Friday in a trade with Houston.

Harbaugh: 49ers Plan To Re-Sign Smith, Let Him Compete

Jun 6, 2014 6:53 AM

The 49ers plan to re-sign quarterback Alex Smith and allow him to compete for the team's starting job, according to coach Jim Harbaugh. San Francisco drafted Nevada's Colin Kaepernick with the 36th overall pick on Friday. "The plan for Alex is unchanged," Harbaugh told Comcast SportsNet Bay Area. "Everything we said from the very beginning: We want to get the best players on our roster that we possibly can and throw out the balls and let them compete. "Alex has the ability and the license to be the starting quarterback -- same thing I said about (outside linebacker) Aldon (Smith) yesterday. Same goes for Colin. Guys will run on their own gas. We believe in competition and earning your positions around here. With Alex, we are rowing and we're not going to miss a beat. Nothing has changed."

Brady Breaks Labor Silence

Sep 12, 2014 3:36 PM

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady joined the labor dispute because he wants to be part of the solution. "We're trying to bring reason and compromise to a very challenging agreement," Brady said Friday. "This is nothing that's easy. There's a lot that goes into it." The reigning league MVP has remained silent on the issue, despite being the face of the lockout, which had been temporarily lifted by Judge Susan Nelson this week. "Look, I've been very fortunate as a player to sign the contracts that I've signed, to be in the position that I'm in as a leader," said Brady, the NFL's highest-paid player. "When the opportunity was presented to me, and Peyton (Manning) and Drew Brees (joined) — we represent the entire group. We're all trying to be part of the solution, not the problem. I know a lot of people are hard at work."

Jones Excuses Bryant From Practice Facility

Nov 2, 2014 6:45 AM

Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones said Friday night he didn't speak with wide receiver Dez Bryant and blamed himself. Jones had said Thursday evening he would speak to Bryant on Friday about a variety of issues and expected the wide receiver to get looked at by the medical staff, but it didn't happen. Jones said he got too busy with the draft and labor issues and couldn't clear his schedule to speak with Bryant. Yet Jones defended Bryant for not being at Valley Ranch. "We had the good communication that I wanted to have," Jones said about his Thursday night conversation with Bryant. "It would have been redundant [to talk again Friday], that's why we did talk. We had a real good talk yesterday and that's where I like to leave it."

Court Restores NFL Lockout

Nov 12, 2014 12:37 PM

A federal appeals court in St. Louis has granted the owners' request to temporarily put on hold U.S. District Judge Susan Nelson's ruling that lifted the lockout. The decision restored the NFL lockout as the second round of the 2011 NFL Draft unfolded on ESPN. The order came only hours after teams opened their doors to players and some of the basic football operations began. The 8th U.S. Circuit Appeals Court said that it would grant the stay while considering the league's appeal of the Nelson's injunction.
